ISRAEL: BE A BLESSING
The Torah tells us that God commanded Abram: "… go to the land that I will show you… and be a blessing (Gen 12:1-2)." Using this text as a consistent focal point, young learners explore Israel through the lens of Israelis who have become a blessing—to their family, their community, their country and/or the world. Students are introduced to Israelis via areas of high interest to this age group—space exploration (Ilan Ramon), sports (Ultimate Peace/Frisbee), the natural world (Yossi Lashem’s commitment to bird and pilot safety), music (the amazing phenomenon of Kululam), and more.
There are ten lessons, some of which benefit from more time than one session. The learning integrates technology, hands-on small group work, and collaborative reflection. It meshes with a statement from one of Ohio’s second grade standards, "People’s actions shape the world in which they live."
